A rubric is an explanatory or introductory commentary (e.g., a sidebar) and also has other meanings. Rubric originates from ruber (Latin for red). Ancient writers (circa 1300) inserted special instructions or explanations into a manuscript using red ink to set them off from black ink used in the main text.
